The clocks have changed, the mornings have a bite to them, and anyone with small children in Scotland knows what comes next: the great hunt for a missing mitten.
Winter accessories are the small things that make the biggest difference to a cold-weather walk. A warm hat, a snug scarf and a decent pair of gloves turn "I'm freezing, can we go home?" into "can we stay out a bit longer?". They also make brilliant gifts, which is why they're so popular as stocking fillers.
Here's a guide to what we have in the shop this season, how to choose, and a few tips for keeping little hands, heads and ears warm.

For Babies and Toddlers: Hat and Mittens Sets
For the youngest ones, a matching hat and mittens set is the easiest way to cover the essentials in one go. Our Ziggle Baby sets are chunky, cosy knits with pom-poms, sized for roughly 0-12 and 12-24 months.
- Highland Cow Knitted Hat and Mittens Set, 0-24 Months (£14.99): a Scottish favourite, and a lovely gift for a new arrival.
- Woodland Knitted Hat and Mittens Set, 0-24 Months (£11.99): hedgehog and toadstool details, unisex.
- Dino Knitted Hat and Mittens Set, 0-24 Months (£11.99): for the little dinosaur fan.

- Stripy Beige Knitted Hat and Mittens Set, 0-24 Months (£14.99): a neutral, cable-knit set that works for any little one.
If you'd like something from a Spanish childrenswear label, our Mayoral sets are a step up in finish:
- Mayoral Baby Hat and Mittens Set, Blueberry (9120) (£16.45): cable knit with ear flaps, for newborns up to 18 months.
- Mayoral Baby Hat and Mittens Set, Baby Rose (9121) (£16.45): a delicate pointelle knit, for newborns up to 18 months.
- Mayoral Baby Knitted Hat and Mittens Set (9929) (£18.99): soft knit with a pom-pom, for 3-12 months.
Mittens are generally the easier choice for babies and toddlers, as there are no individual fingers to wrestle into. That's why these sets suit the youngest age groups so well.

Earmuffs and Headwarmers: For Children Who Hate Hats
Every parent knows the child who refuses a hat but will happily wear something else. Earmuffs and fleece-lined headwarmers keep ears warm without the full hat commitment, and they're a handy fix for kids who get cross about their hair being squashed.

There are only a few of each, so if one catches your eye, don't leave it too long.
How to Choose: A Few Practical Tips
Think about the age. Mittens suit babies and toddlers best. Gloves become practical once children are old enough to use their fingers independently, usually around three and up, which is why our Rockahula gloves start at 3-6 years.
Go by the sizing guide, not just the age. Children vary a lot. If your child is between sizes, a slightly roomier hat and scarf will usually be more comfortable than one that's tight.
Layer up. A thin hat or headband under a hood on very cold days, and a scarf tucked inside a coat, keep the wind out better than one bulky layer.
Check hands and ears, not just how they say they feel. Small children don't always tell you when they're cold. A quick feel of their hands and ears during a walk will tell you whether they need an extra layer.
Label everything. Hats, scarves and gloves have a habit of going walkabout. A name tag or a bit of marker on the label saves a lot of searching.
Gift Ideas: Winter Accessories as Stocking Fillers
Hats, scarves and gloves are great gifts because they're useful, they're easy to wrap, and children really do get plenty of wear out of them.
- New baby or baby shower: a hat and mittens set is a classic, and the Highland Cow set is a Scottish touch that families love.
- Stocking fillers: earmuffs and headwarmers are small, light and fit neatly into a stocking.
- Birthday gifts: a matching hat, scarf and gloves set in a fun design is a thoughtful present.
- Siblings: the Moonlight Grey and Alpine Fairisle ranges work well for brothers and sisters who like to coordinate.
